What is a Translation Memory?

Different translation jobs share common, repetitive language. Without a translation memory, the same phrases need to be translated again and again. This slows down project completion and can lead to inconsistency between translations.

With a translation memory, every sentence you translate is stored and automatically reused in future work - so you always translate the same phrases and sentences consistently, while reducing the manual translation workload.

How does a translation memory work?

A translation memory (TM) is used within Computer Assisted Translation tools like SDL Trados Studio. When translating using a TM in Studio, documents are split into segments. When translated, each segment is stored in the TM with its corresponding translation. As you work through the source file, identical or similar segments to your past translations are detected and completed automatically - dramatically increasing the speed of translation.
